M4CR aims to restore 32,634 hectares of mangroves by 2027
Kaltim carries nearly 12,000 hectares, more than 30 percent of the national target, including the IKN area.
The Mangroves for Coastal Resilience (M4CR) program is targeting the rehabilitation of 32,634 hectares of mangroves by 2027, which the Ministry of Forestry describes as the world’s largest mangrove rehabilitation project. Muhammad Zainal Arifin, secretary of the Directorate General for Watershed Management and Forest Rehabilitation, said the program continues mangrove restoration work that began in 2022 with Badan Restorasi Gambut dan Mangrove after BRGM’s mandate ended. M4CR is being carried out in Kalimantan Timur, Kalimantan Utara, Sumatera Utara, and Riau. The largest share is in Kalimantan Timur, including Ibu Kota Nusantara, with a target of nearly 12,000 hectares, or more than 30 percent of the national total. The Ministry of Forestry is also working with Otorita IKN on implementation.
