LPPOM: Kolesom Jumbo’s 19.7% Alcohol Puts It in Khamr
If the figure is accurate, it is far above the 0.5% threshold in Fatwa MUI 10/2018 and would be deemed haram.
LPPOM said Kolesom Jumbo, which has gone viral on social media, falls into the khamr category because it is said to contain 19.7% alcohol. LPPOM President Director Muti Arintawati said that level exceeds drinks such as beer, which generally contain less than 5%, and is far above the 0.5% threshold in Fatwa Majelis Ulama Indonesia Number 10 Tahun 2018 on food and beverage products containing alcohol or ethanol. Kolesom Jumbo is marketed as a fermented drink made from grapes mixed with spice extract and kolesom, or ginseng jawa, with the scientific name Talinum triangulare. LPPOM warned that a product’s halal status is not determined by virality, natural ingredients or claims of benefits, but also by the production process, including fermentation that can produce alcohol.
