Lockerbie bombing trial delayed after new evidence surfaces

What's next: A Sept. 1 hearing will address timing after jury selection in Washington had been set to begin Aug. 26.

A federal judge in Washington postponed the trial of Abu Agila Mohammad Mas’ud Kheir Al-Marimi, the Libyan man accused of building the bomb that destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988. Jury selection had been due to start Aug. 26, but Judge Dabney Friedrich halted the case after defense lawyers cited newly discovered evidence they said they received from the US government days before trial. The bombing killed 270 people, including 190 Americans, 43 Britons, all 259 aboard the plane and 11 people on the ground. Al-Marimi has pleaded not guilty and faces up to life in prison if convicted. The judge set a Sept. 1 hearing to discuss next steps.
