Lebanon president meets Trump in Washington on truce

Lebanon President Joseph Aoun traveled to Washington to meet U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday (21/7), with talks focused on the Lebanon-Israel border truce and Lebanon's economic recovery. According to Lebanese officials, the two sides will discuss direct negotiations between Beirut and Tel Aviv, implementation of the U.S.-brokered framework agreement on 26 June 2026, and support for the Lebanese Armed Forces. One key point is the establishment of two pilot zones in southern Lebanon, where Israeli troops would withdraw gradually and Lebanese soldiers would take over security. The agenda also includes the future of UNIFIL, whose mandate ends this year and whose phased withdrawal is scheduled to begin in 2027. The visit comes after the sixth round of Lebanon-Israel talks in Rome on 15 July.
