Lazada cuts about 5% of workforce across 6 Southeast Asia markets

What's new: Singapore union members affected by the layoffs will get a year of membership and training grant support.

Lazada cut about 5% of its workforce across Southeast Asia after reviewing selected roles in a regional restructuring drive. The Alibaba-owned e-commerce platform said the changes were aimed at keeping the business efficient and aligned with current needs, but it did not identify the job functions affected. The company operates in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. In Singapore, Lazada said it is working with the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union and other labor network partners to support affected staff. FDAWU general secretary Sankaradass S Chami said the union was informed in advance and will help members with training grants, job support and placement assistance. The move follows another Lazada retrenchment in January 2024 and comes weeks after rival Shopee cut hundreds of developer roles.
