Landfill collapse in Guinea's capital kills 30 after heavy rain
What's next: Rescue crews were still searching the Conakry dump after officials had already moved to close the site over safety risks.
A huge mound of waste collapsed onto homes near Conakry's Dar Es Salam landfill early Sunday, killing at least 30 people and injuring 22, including six seriously, authorities said. The collapse hit around 2 a.m. after heavy overnight rain in the Dar-es-Salam area of the capital, with rescuers using excavators to search for survivors. Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah visited the site as the government deployed emergency personnel and military support. Reuters reported officials had ordered the dump closed days earlier because it was considered dangerous during the rainy season, with waste due to be moved outside Conakry. The site also saw a deadly collapse in 2017.
