Korlantas: Outside-Polri licenses invalid under traffic law
Polri links the ruling to efforts to prevent forged licenses and unauthorized issuance outside official procedures.
Korlantas Polri said driver’s licenses issued outside Polri are not valid under Indonesian law. Korlantas Polri Registration and Identification Director Brigjen Pol Wibowo said the authority to issue SIM belongs only to Polri and is regulated under Article 87 paragraph (2) of Law No. 22 of 2009 on Traffic and Road Transportation. He added that Article 87 paragraph (3) also requires Polri to run the SIM issuance information system. The clarification was issued to prevent SIM forgery or issuance by other parties that do not follow Polri technical specifications. According to Korlantas, SIM is a state document that proves a driver’s competence, registration and identification after verification, testing and recording.
