Kementan prepares import of 100,000 cows in 2027 for milk

The longer-term goal is to raise that to 1 million head by 2029, but funding and procurement plans remain undefined.

The Ministry of Agriculture is preparing an initial plan to import about 100,000 head of cattle in 2027 to support its goal of milk self-sufficiency. Deputy Agriculture Minister Muhammad Saleh Mustafa said the proposal is still a concept, so the final number and implementation schedule have not been set by the government. He said the long-term need is being directed toward 1 million head, with a target date of 2029. Australia, Brasil and Meksiko are among the countries being considered as sources of supply, but there are no details on any agreement, financing or the stages of livestock arrivals. At the same time, Kementan has begun supporting dairy farmers in Kabupaten Magelang, Jawa Tengah, including in Kecamatan Ngablak, to prepare infrastructure, human resources and institutions for when the additional cattle population is realized.
