Kemenkes reviews first provincial hospital in Wamena, Papua Pegunungan

The proposed facility could reduce dependence on hospitals in other regencies and better handle severe cases from eight regencies.

The Ministry of Health has begun reviewing construction of a Papua Pegunungan provincial government hospital in Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency. The facility is being prepared as the first provincial hospital in Papua Pegunungan to strengthen referral services for eight regencies. Kemenkes Director of Clinical Services Obrin Parulin said all hospitals currently operating in the region are still managed by regency governments. He said regency hospitals generally can handle only about 70-75 percent of cases, while 20-25 percent of more complex cases require more complete facilities, equipment and medical staff. Kemenkes will continue the review with the Papua Pegunungan provincial government and the Jayawijaya regency administration before a decision is made on construction.
