KemenHAM Tallies 122,000 Internal Displaced in Papua Conflict
The government is preparing an interministerial meeting, as residents cannot return home until conditions are judged safe.
The Kementerian Hak Asasi Manusia estimates there are 122,000 internal displaced people in Papua who left their homes because of conflict and insecurity. Deputy Minister of Human Rights Mugiyanto said the figure is still preliminary and will be verified in a coordination meeting with several ministries and agencies in the near future. The response will involve, among others, Kementerian Sosial, Kementerian Dalam Negeri, Kementerian Kesehatan, Kementerian PPPA, and Kementerian Pendidikan Dasar dan Menengah. The government judges that the displaced cannot be asked to return to their areas of origin before conditions are safe, while ensuring that their basic needs and shelter are met. Tempo also noted that violence in Papua again killed civilians in the past week.
