Unsoed sting case prompts review of student admissions system

Experts say the case adds to a string of corruption scandals at state universities after a similar case at Unila.

The KPK sting operation at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman has prompted calls to review the governance of higher education, especially the new student admissions mechanism. Education observer Indra Charismadji said the case at Unsoed is not the first at a state university, making systemic reform an urgent need. He also urged the public not to rush to conclude that the case involving Unsoed Rector Akhmad Sodiq is political or purely criminal, while stressing the presumption of innocence. Earlier, on 21 Agustus, KPK named Akhmad Sodiq and five others as suspects in alleged corruption tied to new student admissions. Acting KPK Investigation Director Achmad Taufik Husein said there were six suspects in total.
