Police chief visits Gus Dur's grave ahead of Bhayangkara Day
Polri tied the Tebuireng visit to Gus Dur's reform legacy, including the 2000 split between TNI and Polri.
National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo visited the grave of former Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid, or Gus Dur, at the Tebuireng Islamic boarding school complex in Jombang, East Java, on Saturday (20/6/2026), ahead of the 80th Bhayangkara Day on July 1. During the visit, he wore a peci, prayed and scattered flowers on Gus Dur's grave. He was welcomed by Tebuireng caretaker Abdul Hakim Machfudz, or Gus Kikin, who placed a turban around his neck. Polri public relations chief Johnny Eddizon Isir said the visit was a tribute to Gus Dur's role in national reform and in strengthening Polri as a professional and independent institution. During Gus Dur's presidency, the separation of TNI and Polri was formalized under MPR Decrees No. VI and VII of 2000.
