Kapolri urges MUI to issue total vape ban fatwa

MUI will study the proposal, while police say vape is increasingly used to disguise liquid narcotics.

Kapolri Jenderal Suyudi Ario Seto asked Majelis Ulama Indonesia to issue a total haram fatwa for electric cigarettes, or vape, after concluding the devices are increasingly used to disguise liquid narcotics. He delivered the request during a visit to the MUI central office in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. MUI Fatwa Division chief Asrorun Niam Sholeh said MUI would follow up on the proposal through an in-depth discussion using a range of approaches. Suyudi said BNN and Polri have difficulty distinguishing regular vape devices from those filled with liquid narcotics because they look and smell similar. He also linked the rise in smuggling of liquid methamphetamine and liquid cannabis extract to threats against young people, and cited MUI Jawa Timur, which had earlier banned vape.
