KAI targets net zero emissions by 2060, expands rail electrification
KAI aims to cut emissions 25.76 percent by 2030 from a 647,785-ton CO2e baseline, backed by rail and fuel upgrades.
PT Kereta Api Indonesia is drawing up a net zero emission strategy to reach net zero emissions by 2060, in line with the national target and Perpres Nomor 110 Tahun 2025 on climate change mitigation in the transportation sector. Its four main priorities are rail electrification, operational efficiency, use of cleaner energy, and carbon absorption through reforestation. KAI said electrified track now totals 1,038.7 kilometers, covering KRL Commuter Line, LRT Jabodebek, and Whoosh. The company has also raised biodiesel use from B0 in 2017 to B40 in 2025, with a target of B50 in 2026, and installed solar panels with a total capacity of 3,435.5 kWp at 66 locations. Based on the study presented, rail accounts for about 1 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the national transportation sector, far below road vehicles at 89 percent.
