Judge orders Spanish PM’s wife to stand trial, bars travel
What’s new: Begoña Gomez must surrender her passport and report to court twice a month while she appeals.
A Spanish judge ordered Begoña Gomez, the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, to stand trial on corruption charges and barred her from leaving Spain. Investigating judge Juan Carlos Peinado ordered Gomez to hand over her passport and check in with the court twice a month. She is suspected of using her role as the prime minister’s wife to help secure work contracts, an allegation she denies. El Pais reported that people close to Gomez plan to appeal the travel ban and other conditions. The case, brought by far-right groups opposed to Sanchez’s party, adds to pressure from several corruption probes involving some of the prime minister’s allies, though Sanchez has not been named in those cases.
