Judge orders anonymous jury in Luigi Mangione murder trial

What's next: Jury selection starts Sept. 8 in New York, with an overflow courtroom opened for heavy public demand.

A New York judge ruled that jurors in Luigi Mangione’s upcoming murder trial will remain anonymous as the high-profile case moves toward jury selection next month. State Justice Gregory Carro also ordered an overflow courtroom for the press and public if the main courtroom reaches capacity. Mangione, 28, has pleaded not guilty to murder, weapons and forgery charges in the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson on a Manhattan sidewalk. Prosecutors say they have surveillance footage, fingerprints, DNA, cellphone evidence, a gun tied by ballistics and a notebook describing hostility toward insurers. Jury selection is expected to begin Sept. 8. A separate federal stalking case against Mangione is scheduled for trial in January.
