Judge jails ex-OpenAI engineer in bugging case tied to Saudi contacts
What's new: Prosecutors said his wife and infant left the US on tickets paid by a Saudi military official after his arrest.
A federal judge in San Francisco ordered former OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan held without bail after prosecutors argued he posed a serious flight risk in a case centered on an alleged recording device at the company’s offices. Court filings said Alfozan was in frequent contact with a member of the Saudi royal family and that his wife and young son flew out of the United States a day after his arrest on one-way tickets paid for by a Saudi military official. Prosecutors said the device was hidden behind a TV in a conference room used for leadership meetings and discussions with government officials, raising national security concerns. Alfozan faces a charge of intercepting oral communications and could get up to five years in prison if convicted.
