Jonan urges Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore to tackle fires together
He said companies linked to the fires may be registered in or owned through entities in Malaysia and Singapore, requiring joint sanctions talks.
Presidential Advisory Council member Ignasius Jonan urged Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore to tackle forest and land fires together, rather than blaming one another as transboundary haze worsens. In an Instagram post on Wednesday (21/10), Jonan referred to the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution, signed in Kuala Lumpur on 10 June 2002 and effective in 2003, then ratified by Indonesia through Law No. 26 of 2014. He called on the three countries to sit down together, prepare adequate equipment, technology and personnel, and investigate if there is any element of intent. Jonan also said enforcement should be coordinated because some companies linked to the fires may be registered or controlled through entities in Singapore or Malaysia.
