Jim Jordan seeks criminal probe of Jack Smith over Congress testimony

What's new: Jordan's referral cites records released by Chuck Grassley showing Smith's team reviewed texts from 44 lawmakers and White House staff.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan asked the Justice Department to consider criminal charges against former special counsel Jack Smith, accusing him of making false statements to Congress about whether his team obtained or reviewed lawmakers' text messages. In a letter to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche on Wednesday, Jordan said records released last week by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley undercut Smith's December testimony to the House panel. Grassley's documents showed Smith's team read messages from 44 members of Congress from both parties, along with White House staff, during investigations tied to Donald Trump. Smith has denied wrongdoing.
