Japan issues extreme heat warning across 41 prefectures

Japan on Wednesday issued extreme heat warnings for 41 of its 47 prefectures as a heat wave continued across many regions. A lingering high-pressure system pushed temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius for a second straight day. The highest reading was 40.5 degrees Celsius in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture, followed by 40.1 degrees in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture. A day earlier, the Japan Meteorological Agency also forecast temperatures could reach 40 degrees in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture. According to the Tokyo Fire Department, 287 people were taken to hospitals on Tuesday after suspected heatstroke. The meteorological agency urged residents to use air conditioning, drink enough water and salt, and avoid prolonged outdoor activity.
