Japan deploys ¥10 billion cyber package after wave of hacks

What's new: The plan uses AI tools, boosts investigations and may add a public-private cyber rescue team for acute incidents.

Japan rolled out an emergency cybersecurity package on Friday after a recent surge in hacking incidents hit dozens of businesses and raised concerns about client-data leaks. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said the initial funding totals 10 billion yen, or about $63 million, with the full cost likely to rise as the government seeks additional money. The measures include AI-backed security defenses, stronger investigative capacity, support for victims and steps to contain damage. Japanese media reported the package also envisions a public-private cyber rescue team and a new secretariat this fiscal year to coordinate deployments when attacks are especially severe. GMO Internet Group is among the companies that have been targeted.
