Jakarta to phase out open dumping at Bantargebang from Aug. 1
Open dumping at Bantargebang is targeted to fall from 72.56 percent to 50.34 percent in the second half of 2026.
The Jakarta provincial government will begin a gradual transition from open dumping to controlled landfill at TPST Bantargebang on Aug. 1, 2026. The move is part of the Jakarta 100 Percent Managed Waste Management Road Map drawn up with the Ministry of Environment, while keeping trash collection service from Jakarta running. Under controlled landfill, waste is buried, leveled, compacted and covered periodically with certain material to reduce odor, fire risk, environmental impact and the potential for landslides. In the second quarter of 2026, open dumping still dominated waste management at Bantargebang at 72.56 percent, while processing stood at 7.59 percent. In the third and fourth quarters of 2026, DKI aims to cut open dumping to 50.34 percent, raise controlled landfill to 8.39 percent and lift processing to 20.28 percent. Open dumping is targeted to end in 2028.
