Israel shuts West Bank crossings on election day after Hebron attack
What's new: The military also barred Palestinian workers from settlements as operations in Hebron displaced about 2,000 residents.
Israel will close all land crossings with the West Bank on Tuesday, election day, and bar Palestinian workers from entering settlements after gunmen killed two Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint near Hebron. The Israel Defense Forces said the restrictions cover Judea and Samaria, the Jordan Valley and industrial zones for the day of the vote, with most worker access to settlements already halted from Sunday. The move follows a wider military operation in Hebron that Israeli officials linked to the shooting. Defense Minister Israel Katz said about 2,000 residents had been displaced. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed a large-scale response as he heads into a tight election, while the Palestinian Authority called for international pressure to protect affected residents.
