Iran shuts Strait of Hormuz as US strikes new target in Iran
The route for about one-fifth of global oil and LNG trade is again disrupted, raising risks to shipping and talks between Washington and Tehran.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard on Sunday (12/7) shut the Strait of Hormuz until further notice after firing warning shots at a vessel it said was using an unauthorized route. In a statement carried by IRNA, the ship stopped after repeatedly ignoring instructions to use the approved shipping corridor. Separately, the U.S. military through CENTCOM said it carried out a new strike in Iran on Saturday (11/7) Washington time, following an attack on a Cyprus-flagged container ship transiting the strait. The Strait of Hormuz carries about one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade, making the closure and fresh exchange of fire a broader risk to commercial shipping and efforts to preserve Washington-Tehran negotiations.
