Iran rejects Oman plan to reopen Strait of Hormuz route
Teheran insists ships may pass only on approved routes coordinated by the IRGC Navy, rejecting a broader regional mechanism.
Iran has rejected Oman’s proposal to manage and reopen shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz, amid an ongoing dispute between the two countries bordering the waterway. Reuters and Iranian media reported that Oman proposed a joint regional mechanism, including a split of transit routes and a voluntary fee scheme like the Strait of Malacca. But Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the proposal did not address Iran’s security concerns. Teheran wants Iran to manage shipping on its side of the waters, while Oman would oversee only part of the opposite route. Fars News also denied reports that an agreement had already been reached to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, saying traffic would be allowed only through designated routes with transit permission.
