Iran rallies twice to draw New Zealand 2-2 in tense LA opener

What's new: Boos during Iran's anthem gave way to cheers for both equalizers as politics and soccer collided at SoFi Stadium.

Iran came from behind twice to draw New Zealand 2-2 in a World Cup match at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, with the game unfolding against a politically charged backdrop. Elijah Just scored in the seventh minute to put New Zealand ahead before Ramin Rezaeian leveled in the 32nd. Just restored New Zealand's lead in the 55th minute, but Mohammad Mohebi equalized again in the 64th. Tribunnews reported Iran finished with 17 shots to New Zealand's 14 and pushed for a late winner. Outside and inside the stadium, some Iranian-American fans protested the team and booed Iran's national anthem, while thousands still celebrated the goals. Iran striker Mehdi Taremi said US-Iran political tension “undermines the joy” of the World Cup.
