Iran fires missiles at Israel in first strike since April ceasefire

What's new: Iran closed western airspace, and the U.S. Embassy in Israel told staff and families to shelter in place.

Iran fired missiles at Israel on Sunday, the first such attack since a fragile ceasefire took effect in early April, raising the risk of a wider return to fighting. Iran's state broadcaster confirmed the launches, while sirens sounded across parts of Israel and explosions were heard in the north. Israel's military said it intercepted the missiles and later lifted shelter orders. The exchange followed an Israeli strike on Beirut's southern suburbs earlier Sunday that killed two people and wounded 20, according to Lebanon's health ministry. Tehran had warned it would retaliate if Beirut was hit again. The flare-up threatens mediation efforts involving Pakistan, Egypt and Qatar to revive talks between Tehran and Washington over a broader deal that Iran says must also end fighting in Lebanon.
