Iran fires at bases in Kuwait and Bahrain after US hits radar sites

Why it matters: The exchange further strains an April ceasefire and keeps pressure on Strait of Hormuz shipping and oil flows.

US forces struck Iranian coastal radar and surveillance sites after shooting down four drones headed toward the Strait of Hormuz, according to US Central Command. Iran then fired missiles at US-linked military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain, while its Revolutionary Guard also targeted tankers crossing the waterway without its approval, Iranian media and Reuters reported. Kuwait said it engaged seven ballistic missiles over residential areas, causing property damage but no casualties. Bahrain sounded sirens and urged residents to shelter. The latest exchange deepens a conflict that has already disrupted traffic through the strait, a route that previously carried about a fifth of global oil trade, and clouds mediation efforts to reach an interim deal.
