Iran closes Strait of Hormuz after ship attack, US hits 140 targets

Why it matters: The shutdown jolts a key oil shipping lane as Iran and the US trade new strikes despite plans to keep talks going.

Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz until further notice after its Revolutionary Guards struck a commercial vessel and halted it in the waterway, prompting a fresh US attack on 140 Iranian military targets. US Central Command said the Cyprus-flagged MV GFS Galaxy suffered heavy engine-room damage and a crew member was missing. The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency said the crew abandoned ship into a lifeboat. Iran then launched missiles and drones at US bases and allies in the region, including a strike it said hit Prince Hassan Air Base in Jordan. The escalation came days after attacks on three tankers and has cast further doubt on a truce between Washington and Tehran, even as President Donald Trump said the sides had agreed to continue talks.
