Iran buries Ali Khamenei in Mashhad as successor stays out of sight

What's next: Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared publicly since the strike that killed his father, deepening uncertainty as fighting with the US flares again.

Iran buried former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the Shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad after a week of funeral processions held during renewed clashes with the United States. State media showed large crowds accompanying his coffin through the city, while senior officials including Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Chief Justice Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei and Khamenei’s eldest son Mostafa attended the rites. His son and successor, Mojtaba Khamenei, did not appear. Iranian officials have said he was badly wounded in the strike that killed his father and remains out of public view as security concerns persist. The burial came as Iranian officials reported US strikes killed 17 people and one attack hit a railway line between Tehran and Mashhad.
