Iran threatens U.S. bases in Europe if attacked again
The warning raises the prospect of wider conflict beyond the Middle East, as Hormuz shipping and energy supplies remain at risk.
Iran warned that U.S. military bases in Europe could become targets if attacks on the country are repeated. The threat was delivered Monday by Iranian lawmaker Manouchehr Mottaki, who cited guidance from Iran's supreme leader that the military should respond to threats from any source. According to Mottaki, locations outside the region used to attack Iran fall within the scope of retaliation, and Europe was included in that definition. He also said Iranian missiles can reach Europe. The warning came after U.S. and Israeli strikes on targets in Iran on 28 February triggered a response from Tehran. Although the intensity of the conflict later eased, the risk of fresh clashes has not disappeared. The earlier escalation nearly halted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global supplies of oil, refined products and LNG, and helped push up fuel prices in many countries.
