Ipswich hire Gary O'Neil on 3-year deal for Premier League return
What's next: O'Neil replaces Kieran McKenna ahead of Ipswich's Aug. 22 opener against Sunderland.
Ipswich Town hired Gary O'Neil as manager on a three-year contract, turning to the former Wolves, Bournemouth and Strasbourg boss for the club's return to the Premier League. O'Neil, 43, replaces Kieran McKenna, who stepped down earlier this month after guiding Ipswich back to the top flight by finishing second in the Championship last season. British media reported Strasbourg will receive a fee of about 5 million euros, including add-ons, because O'Neil had two years left on his deal. He led the French club to eighth in Ligue 1 and into the Europa Conference League semifinals last season. Ipswich open the league campaign at home to Sunderland on Aug. 22.
