IndyCar sets first Washington street race for Aug. 22-23

What's new: Penske put road fixes at under $3 million as the 147-lap, 250-mile race takes shape on Pennsylvania Avenue.

IndyCar is set to run its first street race in Washington on Aug. 22-23, with crews building grandstands, fencing and temporary pedestrian bridges along a 1.66-mile course near the National Mall and Capitol Hill. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix will cover 147 laps, or 250 miles, on a seven-turn circuit where cars can top 180 mph. Series owner Roger Penske led the push to bring the event to the District as part of the wider America 250 celebrations tied to President Donald Trump. Bud Denker, president of Penske Corporation and chair of the race, said Penske is covering most costs, including road work, while limited city repaving should help improve about a third of the track.
