IndyCar brings 147-lap Freedom 250 to Washington's National Mall

Why it matters: Organizers expect about 140,000 spectators each day for the one-off race tied to the US 250th anniversary.

IndyCar will race through the streets around Washington’s National Mall this weekend in the Freedom 250 Grand Prix, a one-time event built around the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration. The 147-lap, roughly 250-mile race is set for Sunday, following practice, qualifying and an IROC event on Saturday. Organizers built a 1.66- to 1.7-mile temporary circuit along Pennsylvania and Independence avenues, resurfaced sections of roadway and welded shut more than 200 manhole covers. The event is expected to draw roughly 140,000 spectators each day, with many tickets distributed free by lottery. The race has also stirred concern from preservationists, who warn vibrations could threaten historic artwork near the course.
