Indonesia targets US$45 billion in nickel exports in 2026

The government is also preparing a downstreaming roadmap through 2040, targeting US$618 billion in investment across multiple sectors.

The government aims for Indonesia’s nickel export value to reach at least US$45 billion in 2026, extending a sharp rise after the ban on nickel ore exports and the buildout of domestic processing facilities. Minister of Coordinating Minister for Downstreaming and Energy Transition and Energy Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said nickel export value stood at about US$3.3 billion in 2017-2018, then rose to US$34 billion in 2023 and topped US$40 billion in 2025. Bahlil presented the target at Trade Expo Indonesia 2026. The government says nickel downstreaming not only lifts added value, but also drives supporting industries, technology mastery, participation by national entrepreneurs, and job creation. For the next phase, the government is preparing a downstreaming masterplan through 2040 with a US$618 billion investment target in minerals and coal, oil and gas, forestry, fisheries, and agriculture.
