Indonesia targets rehabilitating 17,000 hectares of mangroves in 2026
The effort comes as mangrove loss runs at about 52,000 hectares a year, backed by national rules through 2055.
The government is targeting rehabilitation of more than 17,000 hectares of mangroves in 2026 to speed recovery of coastal areas. The goal was outlined during World Mangrove Day commemorations at Taman Hutan Raya Ngurah Rai in Denpasar, Bali. Deputy Forestry Minister Rohmat Marzuki said Indonesia has about 3.45 million hectares of mangroves, according to the 2025 National Mangrove Map, or about 23 percent of the world’s total. By the end of 2025, the Forestry Ministry and partners had rehabilitated 91,678 hectares. The 2026 program involves M4CR, Forest Programme VI, JICA, and Nasclim. The government is also linking the work to Government Regulation No. 27 of 2025 and the National Mangrove Ecosystem Protection and Management Plan 2026-2055. At the same time, KKP said mangrove damage reaches about 52,000 hectares a year.
