India tightens NEET retake for 2.2 million medical hopefuls

More than 200,000 personnel were deployed, with biometric checks, AI cameras and GPS tracking of exam papers.

About 2.2 million participants in India took the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, or NEET, again on Sunday (21/6) under tight security after the previous exam was canceled over a question-paper leak. Authorities deployed more than 200,000 personnel, including police, and restricted access to Telegram during the test. The National Testing Agency used biometric verification, AI-based camera monitoring and GPS tracking for distributing exam papers. NEET is the gateway to medical colleges across India, with more than 100,000 undergraduate seats contested by millions each year. The scandal has triggered widespread anger, youth protests and calls for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign. India’s Central Bureau of Investigation has also arrested the alleged mastermind of the leak, a chemistry lecturer.
