India marks 80th Independence Day, Modi launches AI training

Singapore also sent a formal greeting, highlighting expanding ties in digital work, energy security and advanced manufacturing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked India’s 80th Independence Day on August 15 by launching a series of major initiatives, including a nationwide artificial intelligence, or AI, skills training program. At the same time, Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam sent a congratulatory letter to Indian President Droupadi Murmu. In the August 15 letter, Tharman said ties between the two countries rest on a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and strong people-to-people links. He highlighted expanding cooperation in skills development, digitalization, sustainability and advanced manufacturing. Tharman also said Singapore and India have an interest in maintaining a peaceful, open and connected region, including through trade, the digital economy, energy security and the energy transition. In 2025, the two countries marked 60 years of diplomatic relations.
