Hundreds in Chongqing protest after dog abuse video

Hundreds of residents demonstrated in Chongqing's Jiangbei district after a video of alleged dog abuse by a man named Li spread widely on Chinese social media. Public anger grew over the past week and fueled calls for China to adopt stricter animal protection rules. Animal welfare volunteers who went to Li's apartment complex reported finding one severely injured puppy in the corridor outside his unit. Local authorities then moved Li's three puppies to an animal hospital and a shelter for treatment. Police also detained Li and opened an investigation. Footage that circulated briefly showed tension between demonstrators and police outside the housing complex before it was removed from domestic platforms.
