Hull City stun Manchester United 2-0 in Premier League opener
What's new: Hull targeted United's weakness on set-pieces, with Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scoring from poor defending.
Hull City opened their Premier League return with a 2-0 win over Manchester United, handing Michael Carrick's side another damaging start to a season. Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scored as Hull punished United's defending from set-pieces and rarely looked troubled at the other end.
United created little over 90 minutes, with captain Bruno Fernandes pointing to familiar away-day problems. He said the team gave Hull too much possession early, failed to press aggressively enough and again struggled to defend dead-ball situations.
Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic said his staff had identified a flaw in United's set-piece defending before the match. The result was Hull's first top-flight victory over United and another opening-game loss for United, who have now dropped their first league match four times in seven seasons.
