Houthi missile strike kills 53 at Yemen training camp in Shabwa
Why it matters: The attack is one of the deadliest in months as fighting widens near the Bab al-Mandab shipping chokepoint.
A Houthi missile strike killed 53 people and wounded more than 200 at a security forces training camp in Yemen's Shabwa province on Monday, local authorities said. Officials said three ballistic missiles hit the Martyr Ahmed al-Sulaimani Training Centre near Ataq during a drill for recruits from several provinces. The Houthis said they targeted what they called Saudi enemy forces at al-Alam camp. The strike came as Yemen's civil war intensifies after pro-government forces, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, pushed this month to retake Houthi-held territory near the Bab al-Mandab Strait. Hospitals in Shabwa were overwhelmed, with some critically wounded moved to Hadramout and Aden.
