House passes 226-195 bill for Ukraine aid and Russia sanctions

What's next: The measure faces a tougher path in the Senate and would likely draw a veto if it reached the White House.

The House on June 4 approved a bill to send more aid to Ukraine and tighten sanctions on key parts of Russia’s economy, with 18 Republicans joining Democrats in a 226-195 vote. The measure would provide more than $1 billion in security and reconstruction assistance and make up to $8 billion available through defense loans. Lawmakers forced the vote with a discharge petition after Republican leaders kept the bill off the floor for months. The Senate has not taken up similar sanctions legislation, and President Donald Trump has kept sanctions decisions centered in the White House since returning to office in January 2025.
