Hegseth orders 6-month review of US forces in Europe at NATO

What's new: He tied the review to how quickly European allies assume more of the continent's defense burden.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth opened a six-month Pentagon review of U.S. force deployments in Europe during a NATO meeting in Brussels, pressing allies to take greater responsibility for the continent's defense. He said the review would test whether the alliance is moving toward what he called "Europe leading" on regional security. Hegseth also rebuked some allies for denying U.S. forces access to bases and overflight during strikes tied to Iran. The remarks come as Washington pushes NATO toward a "NATO 3.0" model and after U.S. officials signaled they would no longer provide some ships, refueling aircraft and fighter jets in a future crisis as the Pentagon shifts resources toward possible conflict in the Indo-Pacific.
