Heaton backs Lammens to recover after Belgium error

The 24-year-old has been given three weeks off and is projected to rejoin the Manchester United squad in early August.

Tom Heaton believes Senne Lammens will come back stronger after the mistake that led to Belgium's 2-1 loss to Spain in the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals. The 24-year-old goalkeeper came on for the injured Thibaut Courtois in the 71st minute, but failed to keep out Pau Cubarsi's late effort. Mikel Merino then pounced on the rebound to score the winning goal for Spain. Heaton said he had spoken with his Manchester United teammate after the incident. He said pressure and mistakes are part of the goalkeeper's role, and Lammens has the mental strength to recover. Despite criticism in Belgium, Manchester United still have confidence in Lammens. He is now on a three-week break after the preseason tour in Helsinki and is expected to return to training in the first week of August.
