Hamas warns of Israel plan to alter Al Aqsa status

Hamas warned of Israel's latest effort to change the status of the Al Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, including a move that it said targeted the Dome of Moses inside the compound. The group described the action as a dangerous escalation and part of a systematic effort to alter Al Aqsa's religious and historical character. Hamas also called on Palestinians to increase their presence at the mosque compound and urged Arab and Islamic countries to act immediately. The warning came amid a Middle East Eye report that the United States and Israel were quietly seeking to end Jordan's historic custodianship of Al Aqsa. The report said a new Israeli body would declare the site a multi-faith center, allow large-group Jewish worship, and expand Israel's influence over the appointment of imams and preachers, as well as Friday sermon material.
