Government targets waste problems in 24 major cities by 2028

Half the target is to be completed in 2027, starting with landfills handling more than 1,000 tons of waste per day.

The government aims to resolve waste management problems in 24 priority major cities in stages through 2028. Coordinating Food Minister Zulkifli Hasan said the target covers 24 of the 40 cities under review, including Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, Tangerang, Palembang and Medan. Palembang and Medan are scheduled for earlier completion in 2027. The government has split the target into 50 percent by 2027 and the rest in 2028. Initial attention will focus on final processing sites handling more than 1,000 tons of waste per day, such as Bantargebang, Jatiwaringin and several locations in Bali. To speed implementation, the government is also preparing regulatory revisions and coordination across ministries and local governments.
