Government pushes fathers to escort children on first school day
Kemendukbangga/BKKBN has issued SE 17/2026, while several regions are allowing male ASN more flexible start times.
The central and regional governments have begun promoting the Father Escorting Children on the First Day of School movement, or GAMAS, as the 2026/2027 school year introduction period opened Monday (13/7). The Ministry of Population and Family Development/Head of BKKBN issued Circular Letter Number 17 of 2026 as the basis for implementing the campaign nationwide.
Across regions, local governments have followed up with circulars and appeals. In Aceh, the Education Office is urging fathers to take an active role in building their children’s enthusiasm for learning. Nagan Raya Regency has gone further, allowing male ASN to arrive late so they can accompany their children on the first day of school under Nagan Raya Regent Circular Letter Number 395 of 2026. In Tangerang City, the municipal government has issued a similar circular, while in Bali local authorities are giving ASN flexible work hours on the first day of school.
