Government pushes back halal mandate for some products to 2028

UMK, food and beverage-related services, and certain imported goods get an extra transition period beyond the 18 October 2026 target.

The government has pushed back the phased requirement for halal certification for a number of products and services until October 2028 from the original schedule of 18 October 2026. The change will be made through a revision to PP Nomor 42 Tahun 2024 on the Implementation of the Halal Product Assurance sector. Susiwijono Moegiarso, Secretary of the Kemenko Perekonomian, said the adjustment took into account the readiness of business players and the national halal ecosystem. M. Sarmuji, Minister of Industry, said the additional time gives room, especially for small and medium industries, to prepare production processes and certification requirements. Under the revised Article 160, the halal obligation for services related to food, beverages, and slaughtered products — except slaughter services — will take effect on 18 October 2028. Imported products in the same category will also become subject to the halal requirement on that date.
