Government prepares crude oil storage in Sumatra, targets 60-day stock

Feasibility studies are done, and site checks will start late this year, factoring in earthquake risk and local security.

The government is preparing to build crude oil storage facilities in several areas of Sumatra to raise Indonesia's energy reserves to 60 days. The plan was presented by Coordinating Minister for Food and Energy Transition and Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia after a limited cabinet meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026. Bahlil said the facilities are intended to hold imported crude, which can now be stored for just over 20 days. The project's feasibility study has been completed, while site checks will begin late this year, taking into account earthquake risk and local security. The government also wants to move closer to the global minimum reserve standard of about 90 days.
