Google ties US school search access to AI opt-in starting in 2027

Why it matters: K-12 districts that block AI tools would also lose Google Search, a linkage critics call coercive.

Google plans to disable AI features in its K-12 software for US schools in early 2027 unless administrators actively opt in, according to a Nov. 3 company move reported by The New York Times and carried by The Straits Times. The company also plans to cut off Google Search for schools that refuse the AI tools, arguing that search and AI are now closely connected. The policy highlights Google's reach in school technology and has already drawn antitrust criticism. Lina Khan, the former chair of the Federal Trade Commission, said Google was using its dominance in search to pressure schools into accepting AI access for students.
